WITI Honors Fran Allen

Frances Allen, WITI friend and Hall of Fame honoree, will be deeply missed. Ms. Allen passed away on her 88th birthday. "She broke the glass ceiling," her IBM colleague Mark Wegman told The New York Times. "At the time, no one even thought someone like her could achieve what she achieved."

The contributions Fran made during her 45-year career fundamentally improved the performance of computer programs in solving problems, and accelerated the use of high-performance computing. She was the first woman to become an IBM Fellow, and the first woman to win the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM) Turing Award. Fran Allen's work inspired generations of computer scientists. In a nutshell, she helped hardware understand software.
