COVID-19 Could Ruin Women's Careers

Let's start with some background. COVID-19 started in the dawn of 2019 and is currently the biggest pandemic of the 21st century, ravaging all over the world and causing many people to face health, political, educational, and economic hardships.

Traditionally, women have been seen as the ones who should stay home to take care of the kids and their husbands, to clean the house, cook the dinner, and tidy up everything. They haven't been seen as people who should strive for careers, especially in some fields widely dominated by men, such as politics. But after various troubles, women made it clear that they can also be shoulder to shoulder with men in each and every aspect. They have won powerful positions and have proved to be capable of no less than men.

So, why should it be so that COVID-19 could ruin the careers of those women who've earned their exceptional careers?

Well, the first answer is due to economic troubles. Many companies are closing their doors or at least cutting down on the staff and due to the still existing discrimination, although much more subtle, many women are facing the possibility that they will be released from duty.

The other reason is much more complicated. We all know that schools all over the world closed and some still remain closed for the time being. Yes, there are some that have opened their doors but their future is quite insecure with all the quarantines and the rising numbers of COVID-19 cases. Here comes the catch…

Women are still expected to be the stay-at-home parent. This means that should the child study online at home, women are expected to stay at home, too, in order to take care of the children. So women are still being discriminated against as the ones who should sacrifice their careers while men can carry on with theirs.

Sometimes they can do well with finding a sitter. But that is quite an unpopular option nowadays, especially if the child is being quarantined. And, yes, grandparents are usually there to help but with the pandemic that is hammering down hard on the elderly, people choose to stay distanced from their older relatives in order to protect them. Combined, those things mean that there are only two people left to take care of the kids - their mother and father.

And we all know that gender discrimination isn't over yet. Yes, we've come a long way but we still have many miles to go. Women are still paid less in the same positions as men. Their customers come to them with more expectations, with more demands, and with more distrust. Even men still think they are the ones that should bring the bread to the table, whereas their wives should step down and stay home with the children. Thus, there aren't many males who will offer to take on the duty to look after the kids. That puts females at risk. They are in between a rock and a hard place, having to navigate between taking care of the children while also being afraid that the current pandemic-caused economic crisis may close their work positions.

So, COVID-19 is putting women to a test with no right answers and they risk their careers being ruined.
