Dr. Deborah M. KolbDr. Deborah M. Kolb
Co-Director and Professor of Management
SIMMONS College Graduate School of Management

Deborah M. Kolb is the co-director of the Center for Gender in Organizations and Professor of Management at the SIMMONS Graduate School of Management. She is also a senior fellow at the Program on Negotiation at Harvard Law School where she co-directs The Negotiations in the Workplace Program. Dr. Kolb is an authority on gender issues in negotiation and other forms of conflict management. Her research looks at how women (and men) can become more effective problem solvers by mastering the dual requirements of empowerment and connection in negotiation.

She has published several books and numerous articles, including "The Mediators" (MIT Press, 1983), an in-depth study of labor mediation, and "Making Talk Work: Profiles of Mediators" (Jossey-Bass, 1994), a study of the practice of successful mediators. A new book, 'The Shadow Negotiation: How Women Can Master the Hidden Agendas that Determine Bargaining Success" (with Judith Williams), was published by Simon and Schuster in October 2000. Dr. Kolb is also involved in a number of action research and consulting projects that link strategic business concerns with gender, diversity, and work and personal life issues. She was the co-principal investigator of a major action research project, funded by the Ford Foundation, carried out on work/life integration in three corporations. Dr. Kolb is a co-faculty editor of the Negotiation Journal, and on the editorial board of the Journal of Conflict Resolution. She received her PhD from Sloan School of Management at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Cambridge, MA, USA, where her dissertation won the Zannetos Prize for outstanding doctoral scholarship.

Susan PugliaSusan Puglia

IBM Software Solutions

Susan Puglia is vice president of Server Development for IBM's Software Solutions Division, and director of the Toronto Laboratory. Assuming this responsibility in September, 1998, Puglia is responsible for the 1500-person software development team in Toronto, which holds IBM world-wide software missions for application enabling and integration, database management, electronic commerce and retail banking solutions. Puglia also provides direction for the development of IBM's e-business application servers for the IBM Software Group.

Before taking this position, Puglia was vice president for S/390 Software Development in which she managed the development of the four S/390 operating systems: OS/390, VM, VSE and TPF. 000. During this time, she was also the senior site location executive in Poughkeepsie, New York. Previously, Puglia was the director of Emerging Technologies and Industry Business for S/390, with responsibility for bringing e-business and Business Intelligence solutions to the S/390 platform.

Puglia joined IBM in 1981 as an MVS system programmer in IBM's large systems engineering and programming development laboratory. Subsequently, she held a variety of technical and managerial positions in the large systems development organization.

Megan SmithMegan Smith

Megan Smith came to PlanetOut from General Magic, Inc., where she worked for six years as manager of European Alliances, manager of Partners and Licensing, lead mechanical engineer for Magic Cap 1.0 and Hardware Team Projects Manager. At Magic, Smith closed $9 million of equity financing from and $2 million in software and hardware licensing deals, managed the partner relationships with OEMs Sony, Apple, Motorola, Matsushita, Philips and Nortel, and led the mechanical engineering of the original reference prototype PDAs and Smart Phones.

Previously, Smith worked at Apple Computer Japan in Tokyo and was responsible for market development of the then nascent multimedia market where she and her colleague executed a full day of NHK programming on Hypermedia.

Smith holds a B.S.M.E. and M.S.M.E. in mechanical engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Her work included two years at MIT's Media Lab, working with Woodie Flowers, Alan Kay and Marvin Minsky as part of the Apple Computer Vivarium early learning project.

Over the years, Smith has designed an award-winning bicycle lock, worked as part of the team on a Space Station engineering construction experiment that eventually flew on the U.S. Space Shuttle, and run a field research study on solar cook stoves in Ecuador and Bolivia.

Human Facets

Helen Turnbull is president and principal consultant of Human Facets, an international organizational consulting firm specializing in workforce diversity and multiculturalism, strategic planning, change management and all aspects of group dynamics. She has extensive experience of working with diversity issues in both USA and Europe.

Human Facets clients include Texas Instruments, J.P. Morgan, Motorola, Hewlett Packard, A.T. & T., Lucent Technologies, NCR Corporation, IBM, National Westminster Bank, American Express and Chorum Technologies. Human Facets conducts diversity awareness and skill building workshops and has been the course developer for a number of major corporations diversity initiatives. Human Facets has drawn on Turnbull's experience to develop three diversity assessment tools, including WITI's Gender Gap Assessment.

Turnbull is an accomplished public speaker and has spoken at many conferences including ASTD, WITI's regional and national conferences and the South Florida Business Women's Conference. Her topics have ranged from diversity and gender issues in the workplace to change management and the dynamics of teaming. She is a native of Scotland, a passionate golfer, and has a master's degree in industrial psychology and mental health counseling, and is a Ph.D. candidate in 2000.

Financial Finesse

Liz Davidson is founder and CEO of Financial Finesse, an Internet-based company dedicated to educating women about investing and financial planning. Financial Finesse provides unbiased financial information through its website, national seminars and a radio program. A nationally recognized expert on long-term investing, Davidson holds an MBA from UCLA and successfully founded and managed Davidson Andrade, an investment company with over $35 million under management.

While working in the financial industry, Davidson observed a shortage of female investors, motivating her to create a financial education seminar for her female associates focusing on the importance of investment planning; the response was overwhelmingly positive. A year later, Davidson expanded the concept into Financial Finesse.

Davidson's passion for empowering women has led to her active involvement in numerous organizations that help girls and women. She assists the Teen Entrepreneur's Program at the YWCA in East Palo Alto by teaching teenage girls about saving and investing. She is also involved with Independent Means, a company that offers products and services that help girls achieve financial independence. Davidson is a member of the Women's Foundation Planned Giving Board, an organization that provides seed funding to small non-profits focused on financial security and independence for women. Davidson currently hosts a live weekly radio show, also called Financial Finesse, on Silicon Valley's Business Radio 1220 KBZS.

Cecilia Pagkalinawan is the CEO of BoutiqueY3K, a next generation e-marketing and e-commerce strategic consulting agency. In 1997, Pagkalinawan became president of Abilon Corporation, the U.S. branch of Abilon International. At Abilon, Pagkalinawan initiated the company's strategic business relationships, attracting clients such as Nine West and Del Laboratories. Prior to Abilon, Pagkalinawan was executive producer and creative director of the Interactive Division of Messner Vetere Berger McNamee Schmetterer/Euro RSCG. At MVBMS, she developed online advertising and marketing campaigns for Volvo, MCI, International Paper, and New Balance. As VP of Creative Affairs and Client Services at K2 Design, Pagkalinawan created one of the first online malls, developing virtual stores for clients such as Footlocker, Lady Footlocker, and Champs.

Pagkalinawan is the co-founder of MOUSE (Making Opportunities for Upgrading Schools and Education), a volunteer group of over 1000 Silicon Alley professionals dedicated to improving technology in the educational system to prepare youths for a future in new media, business, and technology. For her for-profit and non-profit work and interests, Cecilia received a fellowship as one of the Rockefeller Foundation's Next Generation Leaders.
