Marlene Hirose

Data Engineer, IMVU
112: Non-Traditional Pathways for Women into Tech

Marlene Hirose took a long and winding path to become a data engineer - starting with a B.S. in Mathematics, heading to desktop publishing, teaching English in Japan, teaching 4th and 5th grade in San Jose, getting a second B.S. in Media Arts and Animation. After a few years as a digital artist, Ms. Hirose decided to change careers again and went to Hackbright Academy to become a software engineer. Currently working at IMVU, she happily constructs SQL queries in Hive, codes in Python, and sets up Tableau data visualizations for product, finance, and marketing teams.
