DESIGNING YOUR PORTFOLIO CAREER -Dr. Susan Lawley

WITI gives you an opportunity to network, meet other members and hear real stories of how women succeed in technology. This meeting will feature Dr. Susan Lawley on the subject of Portfilo Career Planning. The FOOT STEPS series will resume early next year.

The world of work as we've known it is vanishing. The full-time job is an endangered concept. Unemployment is rising at record levels while the natural optimism of many job seekers is evaporating with each unanswered phone call and every rejection letter. Thankfully, there is another path to career success and personal satisfaction - or more accurately put - there are other paths with the emphasis on the letter s, the plural. In fact, in Britain, they refer to the trend as "going plural." In the US, the phenomenon has been described as patchwork careers, casserole careers and portfolio careers.

Those savvy individuals engaging in the pluralistic practice are called career blenders or simultalents™ or renaissance workers. They engage in multiple careers simultaneously bringing unexpected benefits to their various employers and surprising peace of mind to themselves. Within corporations, these individuals are called "content blenders" or scanners and bring the "beneficial surprise" to their employer.

Dr. Susan Marc Lawley studied the work practices of simultalents™ in her doctoral research. In this session, Sue shares her understanding of how portfolio careers develop, describes the pros and cons of engaging in multiple occupations, outlines techniques for keeping everything on track and reveals the surprising benefits of career/content blending.

As a simultalent™ herself, Dr. Lawley infuses her presentation with countless personal anecdotes which enliven the discussion. Sue has held senior management positions at Bankers Trust Company and Goldman Sachs. She co-founded an award-winning corporation, The Camelot Group, in 1989 and then sold the enterprise to a publicly traded firm in 1998. She co-created a not-for-profit organization, Lasting Connections in 1992, which still operates today. Sue has a BA, MBA, MA, and Ph.D. Her current career configuration includes adjunct teaching of HR courses at the Master's level, career counseling and life coaching, consulting, corporate training, creative writing, and her newest venture, Sisters-in-Script, an organization offering innovative programs and networking sessions for aspiring women writers.
