Best Practices in Data Governance
By Malcolm Chisholm, Data Governance Expert

Data Governance (DG) is seen as increasingly important by many enterprises in order to realize the true potential of their information. However, many DG initiatives have ended up as irrelevant bureaucratic exercises, and while executive management are prepared to fund DG initiatives, they are worries that the outcome will add to problems of information management, rather than resolve these problems. Clearly, practical approaches are needed, together with an understanding of lessons learned from the first rounds of DG. This presentation examines what DG is, what a DG program consists of, and what the current best practices are for a range of DG requirements. Issues that have arisen in early DG adopters are described. Particular focus is given to data content management and the migration of DG away from IT and into the business. Information Knowledge Management and Production Data Support are also discussed as under-served areas of DG.
