orange arrow  Creative Work / Creative Workers
By David Creelman

The Rise of the Creative Class One of the most interesting recent books for businesswomen is Richard Florida's The Rise of the Creative Class. It proposes a parallel change currently underway in the economy and in society. In the economy, value is produced by creative work, not just the efficient production of goods or delivery of services. In society, a new creative class is evolving and making its power felt. The creative class has different tastes, ambitions and values from the white-collar middle class from which it has emerged.

This has implications for us, as managers, in two areas. One is in how we attract and retain talent. Members of the creative class - whether they be graphic artists or accountants - want to be treated as individuals. They want to be valued for who they are. They want to make a contribution. The deal you need to offer them is not, "I'll give you a good salary and opportunities for promotion" but "I'll give you an environment that is supportive of who you want to be." Continued ...

orange arrow How do you relate to technology?

The next WITI FastTrack, titled "W Technology - How are women using technology? What works? What doesn't?", will available in September. What do you think? Have you found that certain technologies work better (or worse) for women? Is this a gender issue? What could companies do to make their technology products more appealing to women? Is it the sales process that turns women away or is it something else? Please share your thoughts on our discussion board.

For FastTrack advertising deadlines and editorial information, please visit our website or call 800-334-9484.

orange arrow  Are You Really Listening? ... some tips for becoming a better listener
By Jane Herman

Jane Herman "Uh huh. Yeah. I hear you!" We use these expressions all the time when others are talking to us to let them know we are listening. But are we truly paying attention? Are we really "getting" the person who is speaking? Are we listening for who they are and how they feel as well as what they are saying? Are we listening for what is not said as well as what is?

Don't underestimate the gift you give someone when you give him or her your focused attention. We all need to be "heard" and to be "gotten". For true communication to occur it requires more than just two or more people talking (i.e., self expression) - it requires mutual listening, hearing, and understanding. You can learn to communicate on a deeper level if you master the key skill of listening fully and you can learn how to help others fully listen to you.

orange arrow  Is Low-Carb Dead?
By Mellanie Hills

Mellanie True Hills From what I've heard and read from some of the media, I thought we were all on low-carb diets. Except for me, that is. That doesn't appear to be the case.

Though I know many people doing the low-carb regimen, a recent survey that I conducted provided some surprising results. While I fully expected the largest percentage of dieters to be on low carb, that wasn't the case at all.

The survey was unscientific, and the sample size was small, but it does indicate a potential trend. I surveyed readers of my Healthy Living News e-zine as well as those on an all-female distribution list I maintain. I also factored in responses to my questions posed on the WITI discussion forum. Therefore, a high percentage of the responses came from women.

Rayona Sharpnack Rayona Sharpnack appointed to Women's Leadership Board at the Kennedy School at Harvard

WITI congratulates Rayona Sharpnack, founder of the Institute for Women's Leadership and one of WITI's founding members, on her recent appointment to the Women's Leadership Board at the Kennedy School at Harvard University. The Women's Leadership Board consists of more than 80 outstanding women from around the world who are leaders in their work and in their communities. The Board advises the Dean of the Kennedy School on teaching, research and outreach programs relating to women, advocates for the advancement of women worldwide, and mentors Kennedy School women students who will be among the next generation of world leaders. It's goal is to increase the skills, knowledge, strength, and access of women to positions of leadership in order to ensure their equitable participation in the complex global decision making of our times.

Women's historic absence from seats of power has permitted many policy areas critical to women - from birth control and childcare to inheritance rights and access to HIV/AIDS drugs - to be ignored or to become side issues because women have not had an equal voice in establishing priorities and policy. The Board's ultimate success may well be to eliminate the need for its existence as women attain unquestioned access to varied decision-making tables. The Board's short-term progress is chronicled by increases in the number of female leaders as well as its visibility associated with policy issues that advance the participation of women.

Our congratulations to Rayona on this acheivement!

orange arrow Interviewees Needed!

Tammie Page is working on a Doctor of Management in Organizational Leadership at the University of Phoenix. She is conducting a research study entitled "A phenomenological study of female executives in information technology companies in the Washington, DC metropolitan area". The purpose of the research study is to identify skill sets, coping mechanisms, and strategies used by executive-level women to sustain their positions for 3-5 years within information technology companies located in the Washington, DC area. Results of this study may increase awareness of the under-representation of women among information technology executives and help executive level women sustain their positions. Participation would include a 1 hour one-on-one audio recorded interview.

If you can assist Tammie, please contact her at [email protected].
